    Bank of America Roval 400:

The final race in the Round of 12 has arrived, as the drivers will attempt to conquer the “roval” at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Bank of America 400 Roval is on the hybrid course in the heart of NASCAR country that measured 2.28 miles in length and features 17 turns. The Roval uses part of the traditional oval track, but also the road course on the infield.

This race began in 2018 and there have been five different winners in six years, so we could have a surprise outcome with spots in the next playoff round on the line.

    2024 NASCAR Cup Series Standings

We’ve had two surprising winners the last two weeks, as Ross Chastain won the Hollywood Casino 400 and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the YellaWood 500. Neither one was an active playoff driver. Remember that a win automatically sends you to the next stage.

In this round, the top 12 had their point totals reset to 3,000 and then the proper bonus points were applied.

Here are the drivers by standings order (bonus points in parentheses):

    • William Byron (122)
    • Christopher Bell (105)
    • Kyle Larson (100)
    • Denny Hamlin (78)
    • Alex Bowman (74)
    • Ryan Blaney (73)
    • Tyler Reddick (62)
    • Chase Elliott (61)
    • Joey Logano (48)
    • Daniel Suarez (41)
    • Austin Cindric (32)
    • Chase Briscoe (29)

Obviously Byron, Bell, and Larson move to the next round no matter what on the strength of their point totals. Byron has actually finished second and third the last two weeks. Larson and Blaney are the only others with a top-five finish in this round.

2024 NASCAR Cup Championship Playoffs Format

There are 10 races in the playoffs, with the first nine grouped into sets of three. A win in one of those races automatically clinches a berth in the next set of races.

The bottom four drivers after each set of three will be eliminated from contention for the championship. Bonus points continue to matter and will be accumulated through the postseason.

    Here are the playoff races:

    Round of 16

Quaker State 400 (Atlanta) – Sunday, September 8

Go Bowling at The Glen (Watkins Glen) – Sunday, September 15

Bass Pro Shops Night Race (Bristol) – Saturday, September 21

    Round of 12

Hollywood Casino 400 (Kansas) – Sunday, September 29

    YellaWood 500 (Talladega) – Sunday, October 6

Bank of America Roval 400 (Charlotte) – Sunday, October 13 (we are here)

    Round of 8

South Point 400 (Las Vegas) – Sunday, October 20

    Straight Talk Wireless 400 (Homestead-Miami) – Sunday, October 27

    Xfinity 500 (Martinsville) – Sunday, November 3

    Championship

NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race (Phoenix) – Sunday, November 10

Bank of America Roval 400 Winners

As mentioned, we’ve only had six races on the Roval and the winners by year are Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott x2, Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, and A.J. Allmendinger.

Allmendinger is largely a “road course ringer” at this point, in that he rarely runs well on traditional ovals, but he’ll run well on the road courses. Five of the six race winners are guys currently alive for the Cup Championship, so we’ll see if they can secure a big win and some more bonus points.
